The test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL) is a standardized test that measures the English proficiency of students who wish to enter college, university, and/or the workplace in English-speaking academic/professional settings. The new iBT (internet-based test) TOEFL exam, also known as The Next Generation TOEFL Test, has four sections covering the language skills of reading, listening, speaking, and writing. The test is about 3.5 - 4 hours long, with one 10 minute break after the listening section. In the reading section, students read three passages about some academic / university topic and answer (13-14 questions per reading passage) questions about them.
In the listening section, students listen to two conversations and four lectures and answer questions about them. In the speaking section, students speak in response to two questions about their own experience (give an opinion) and four questions about texts that they listen to or read during the test. In the writing section, students write in response to two questions. One question is about a reading and a lecture, and the other question is about a general topic (give an opinion).
